Ballycorus lead mines chimney and flue
Industrial - mine chimney and flue
Granite chimney with an external spiral stair near the summit of Carrickgollogan, at the top of a stone flue about 2 km long built in 1836 to condense lead from the smelter fumes. Used as a landmark on Admiralty charts. Open-cast mining began c. 1807; the Mining Company of Ireland ran the site from 1826; mining ended in the 1860s but smelting of Wicklow and Manx ore continued until closure (1913 per Wikipedia; 'the 1920s' per Coillte). Reached by the Lead Mines Way.
